History
of the Philippine College of Geriatric Medicine

Organization Profile

Geriatrics is a new field of medicine in the Philippines.

The Philippine College of Geriatric Medicine was born from two organizations that already were independently existing - the Philippine College of Geriatrics and Gerontology (PCGG) and the Philippine Society of Geriatric Medicine (PSGM).

The Philippine College of Geriatrics and Gerontology was established in 1990 by the late Dr.  Cesar Villafuerte who was a consultant of the Santo Tomas University Hospital.

The association developed a curriculum and utilized a modular training program that accepted a diversified group of physicians interested in managing the various conditions that face the elderly. The Philippine Society of Geriatric Medicine (PSGM), likewise was established in 1999 by the late Dr. Emmanuel Gatchalian of St. Luke’s Medical Center Quezon City.

The PSGM designed and pursued a fellowship program that accepted physicians who trained either in internal medicine or family medicine.
